Rep. Porter Introduces Legislation to Support Clean Vehicles and Innovation

Congresswoman’s bill establishes a grant program for the installation of electric charging and hydrogen fueling stations on the nation’s highways

On Friday, Congresswoman Katie Porter (CA-45) joined Congressmen Harley Rouda and Mark DeSaulnier in introducing the Clean Corridors Act of 2019.

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, cars and trucks account for nearly one-fifth of all U.S. emissions – emitting around 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases for every gallon of gas. While southern California has been a leader in the purchase and production of zero emission vehicles, the number of charging stations in the state and in neighboring states is not enough to support the rapid growth necessary for continued expansion.

The Clean Corridors Act would establish a grant program for the installation of electric vehicle charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure on our national highways. This legislation will help those with zero emission vehicles fully utilize these vehicles and will encourage continued purchasing.

“Making clean energy innovation accessible for families is one of my top priorities here in Congress,” said Porter. “I’m proud to have introduced this legislation with my colleagues from California, which will help more Americans purchase and use zero emission vehicles.”

California’s 45th Congressional District is home to both car manufacturers with electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars in their fleets, including Kia and Hyundai, and researchers in the fuel cell space, at the University of California Irvine’s National Fuel Cell Research Center.

Congresswoman Porter has supported other legislation, including the Climate Action Now Act to move us to a clean energy future while creating jobs and fostering innovation. Porter will continue working to keep her commitment to Orange County families to ensure we combat climate change while supporting our economy.
