Rep. Porter Statement on Oversight of Coronavirus Relief
Irvine, April 22, 2020
IRVINE—Congresswoman Katie Porter (CA-45) today released the following statement regarding oversight of coronavirus relief efforts:
“The Congressional Oversight Commission provides much-needed accountability in the CARES Act. I’m glad that four out of five members finally have been appointed to the Commission, and I am eager to see the Commission get to work on making sure that our taxpayer dollars being given to big corporations actually go to keep working families on payroll.
“Congress has a constitutional duty to conduct oversight. This is a responsibility every member of Congress takes on with the oath of office, and it’s an obligation that I take very seriously.
“Throughout my time in Congress, I have been a strong voice for accountability, whether it’s a Big Bank CEO or a high-level Administration official. I’ve confronted executives with their hypocrisy in hearings, and I’ve written reports documenting where President Trump has failed the American people.
“As the coronavirus pandemic continues to threaten our physical and financial wellbeing, regardless of whether I serve on the Congressional Oversight Commission, I will continue to speak truth to power and call out corporate abuse wherever I see it.”
Earlier this month, Rep. Porter released a report showing that mask and ventilator exports from the United States increased dramatically in the early months of 2020.
