Rep. Porter Backs House Resolution Calling for End of Korean War

Orange County Congresswoman urges Administration to prioritize ending the near 70 year conflict and reuniting families

As the international community commemorates the 75 years of the United Nations this weekend, U.S. Congresswoman Katie Porter (CA-45) today announced her support of a House resolution calling for the end of the Korean War, now in its 69th year. The resolution urges the Trump Administration to provide a clear roadmap for achieving a permanent peace settlement and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula while calling for the reunions of divided Korean and Korean-American families. The resolution also affirms that the United States remains committed to its obligations under the 1953 Mutual Defense Treaty.

“I’m proud to represent Orange County, which is home to the second largest Korean community in the United States,” Congresswoman Porter said. “The United Nations was founded to end the scourge of war, and it is in this vein that I am urging the Trump Administration to help bring this conflict to a close. For too long, Korean and Korean American families have been separated from their loved ones. It’s past time to formally end the Korean War and to see these families reunited.”

“As a second generation of a divided family and President of Korean American Public Action Committee which advocates peace on Korean Peninsula, I wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks to Congresswoman Katie Porter's support on H. Res.153 demanding for the official end of the Korean War,” said Casey “KC” Choi, President of Korean American Public Action Committee (KAPAC). “As we know Korean Peninsula is the only remaining divided nation in the world causing tons of pains and sufferings for Korean people. With the strong leadership of members of Congress like Katie Porter, we, Korean Americans and divided families, can have new hope for the unification and the permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.”

"It brought me tears of joy to hear that Representative Katie Porter will add her name to the growing list of Members of Congress who support H. Res. 152, calling for a formal end to the Korean War,” said Soon Cho, a grassroots advocate and civil engineer from Newport Beach. “Her leadership gives me hope that one day Korea will see peace and impacted families will be able to reunite. The U.S. Congress has an important role to play in making progress toward that result."

As an active member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Congresswoman Porter is committed to supporting the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. In March, she spoke out about the need to reunify Korean-American families following the House’s passage of the Divided Families Reunification Act, which would require high-level Administration officials to make reunification of divided Korean-American families a top priority. She also previously backed a bill calling on the United States and North Korea to allow Korean Americans to reunite divided family members within 60 days of the legislation’s passage.
