The Fight for Equality

Dear friend,

June is Pride Month—a time to celebrate our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors, and to recognize that there’s still much work to be done to achieve equality for every American. From the Stonewall Riots to leading the charge for the Equality Act, the LGBTQ+ community has fought tirelessly for justice. I'm committed to being their ally in this battle.

Everyone deserves to live their truth. And yet, in America today, it’s legal to discriminate based on sexual orientation and gender identity. I’m proud the House passed the Equality Act earlier this year to finally change that. The bill bans discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in education, housing, employment, and more. This bill is an important step forward for the LGBTQ+ community. I will keep working with my colleagues in the Senate to move this critical legislation across the finish line.

In the meantime, I’m grateful the Biden Administration is taking meaningful steps to better protect members of the LGBTQ+ community under the law. Since taking office, President Biden directed all federal agencies to prevent discrimination on the basis of sex, including sexual orientation and gender identity. I’m also glad that President Biden reversed the hateful ban on transgender individuals serving in the Armed Forces, as all servicemembers should be able to do their work with honor and dignity.

I was honored to join the LGBTQ Center Orange County for their 2021 LGBTQ Youth Convening this May. It was inspiring to be with youth leaders and advocates as they discussed the best ways to create change right here in Orange County. I am proud to work with these young advocates, and I hope you will join us—not just during Pride Month, but every day of the year. As a proud member of the Congressional LGBTQ Equality Caucus, I am strongly committed to continuing the fight for the LGBTQ+ community in Orange County and across the United States.
