Military Academy Nominations

Thank you for your interest in obtaining a nomination to a U.S. Service Academy. The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. Students who are selected receive a tuition-free undergraduate degree — including full room and board — from one of the most prestigious colleges in the nation.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment. Congresswoman Porter is able to nominate up to ten individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to our district.

Our office will hold a general service academy information night on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at 4:00 PM. Please click here to register for the event. We will be holding a women's academy night at the end of October.

To request a U.S. Service Academy Nomination from our office, you must complete the form below and send the completed nomination application package to our Irvine office. Please note that, in addition to requesting a nomination from our office, students must also apply to each academy for admission.

To be considered for a nomination to a U.S. Service Academy, the completed application, together with ALL supporting materials, must be received by our Irvine district office by Sunday, November 12, 2023. You may either mail them in or physically drop them off. As nominations are highly competitive, applicants are encouraged to apply for nominations with additional offices, including those of President Biden, Vice President Harris, Senator Feinstein, or Senator Padilla.

Applicants will be evaluated by a voluntary panel of qualified judges on a number of holistic factors, including academic performance, intelligence, leadership ability, moral character, extracurricular activities, and motivation to serve.
