As an experienced consumer protection attorney, Congresswoman Porter has a proven record of defending consumers from corporate abuse.

In Congress, Rep. Porter puts Orange County families first. She’s not beholden to special interests, and she’s not afraid to take on powerful CEOs and Washington insiders when they try to rig the system against working people. She proudly voted for the FAIR Act, which would eliminate forced arbitration clauses that corporations use to prevent mistreated workers and cheated consumers from getting justice. As a longtime consumer advocate, she is focused on conducting oversight efforts to shine a light on corporate greed and stop big business from cheating Americans.

Congresswoman Porter is holding government leaders accountable to prioritize consumers over industry profits. She stood up to leaders of both parties to oppose a bill that would prevent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from creating its own program to allow Americans to file their taxes for free. She also called out the Trump Administration for rolling back protections that prevent debt collectors from harassing American families.

To protect students against predatory lending practices, Congresswoman Porter introduced the Relief for Defrauded Students Act. This bill would create a permanent student loan forgiveness program for borrowers to reclaim loan payments from predatory institutions. She also introduced legislation to strengthen the oversight powers of the top federal official responsible for defending student borrowers.

Additionally, Congresswoman Porter is working hard to protect veterans from pervasive predatory lending schemes. She released a report documenting how predatory lenders repeatedly exploit vulnerable servicemembers, veterans, and military families with bad home loans. To rectify this wrong, she introduced the VA Home Loan Transparency and Consumer Protection Act of 2022, which would make it easier for Congress, Veterans Service Organizations, and military families to get the information they need to stop fraudsters. She also led calls for a study of predatory marketing targeting veterans online, which became law as part of the annual defense policy bill in 2021. Scamming people who’ve sacrificed for and defended our country to make a quick buck is despicable behavior that must end.

No one enjoys being ripped off. Sadly, older Americans are disproportionately targeted by scammers. That’s why Congresswoman Porter held a town hall to discuss how older Americans can protect themselves from scammers. She also introduced bipartisan legislation that empowers the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to shut down fraudulent political action committees that cheat older Americans out of millions of dollars each year.

As health care costs continue to skyrocket, Congresswoman Porter is fighting to protect patients and hold Big Pharma accountable. Because of Big Pharma’s corporate abuse, too many Americans can’t afford the prescriptions they need to survive. To protect patients, Congresswoman Porter introduced legislation that prevents drug manufacturers from profiting off unreasonable price hikes. She also introduced the Medical Debt Relief Act, which would shield patients from long-term financial harm by removing paid off or settled medical debt from their credit reports. 

As a member of the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, she is rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in the organ transplant industry to save lives. She also has taken on the dialysis industry, releasing a report that reveals how the largest dialysis providers have been pushing patients toward less effective treatments that boost their profits.

She is also a champion for protecting Americans’ privacy. After the 2017 Equifax data breach compromised the personal financial information of 147 million people, Congresswoman Porter exposed the CEO for arguing in federal court that the breach did not harm consumers. She has also urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to crack down on companies that collect and sell users’ location data even after users deny them permission to do so. Americans deserve to have peace of mind about the security of their private information.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Congresswoman Porter has been a strong advocate for consumers getting the refunds they’re owed. She called out Ticketmaster for refusing to refund their customers for events that were postponed indefinitely by the pandemic. She also wrote to the Department of Transportation, explaining how airlines are using taxpayer-funded bailout money to lobby for weaker rules protecting passengers, and urging the department to enforce ticket refunds for flights canceled due to COVID.
