Dear Neighbor,

I know our Orange County communities experience the harms of climate change first hand, from coastal flooding that erodes beaches to wildfires that damage our homes and businesses. 

For decades, Washington has failed to take climate action, but I’ve made it a top priority since I’ve been in Congress. I’m excited to share that, following my advocacy, California was selected as one of just seven clean hydrogen hubs under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. 

The California Hydrogen Hub will strengthen our domestic market for low-cost, clean hydrogen as fuel. The Hub will support clean energy technology to reduce emissions from public transportation, heavy-duty trucking, and port operations, which are all significant sources of air pollution in our state. And, this investment is estimated to create 220,000 good-paying jobs in California.

I’ve met with researchers, environmental advocates, and labor leaders and learned from these experts how California has been leading the charge in research and development of hydrogen fuel cell technology. That’s why I have been a vocal advocate of California’s Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems, or ARCHES, a public-private partnership that will now serve as our state’s hub. 

Since my first term, I have spearheaded clean hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels. I introduced two bipartisan bills that would incentivize hydrogen fuel cell technology in ports and heavy duty trucks. During Congress’s annual appropriations process, I pushed for increased federal investment for clean energy technologies, including hydrogen fuel.

This recent announcement is a win for California, for good-paying jobs, and for our planet.
